John Howard Award

John Howard served the City of Medford, Massachusetts as Superintendent of Parks until his retirement in 1955 after a serious heart attack. In 1957, he volunteered to take on the job of Secretary/Treasurer for the New England Association.

John Howard continued his tireless work for the Association until his death on January 23, 1963. Through his years of volunteer work, his reports and records were impeccable as he watched the Association grow from 80 to 140 members at the time of his death.

As a lasting tribute to the memory of John Howard and his dedication to excellence in the park profession, the John Howard Award was established in 1964.

The John Howard Award is the most prestigious honor accorded a member of the New England Park Association. It is only awarded to a member who has displayed exemplary and meritorious service in the park field.
